Fluorescent light bulbs are an energy efficient lighting option that has achieved great popularity in recent years. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, fluorescents do not create light through heat, but instead use a complex process of ionization and chemical reactions. Because of this, they emit much less heat than incandescent bulbs, while also producing a whiter hue of light than most incandescent bulbs.

In addition to the typical options of various watt usages and lumen outputs, fluorescent bulbs also come in a range of different shapes designed for certain fixtures. Some of the most common shapes include:

  • • Compact fluorescent light bulbs - More commonly called “CFLs,” compact fluorescents are created in a spiral design that closely mimics the size and shape of traditional incandescent bulbs. These have gained popularity in household usage as an affordable, yet more energy efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs.
  • • Linear bulbs – These are the long tubular fluorescents that are typically seen in commercial fixtures. Be sure to check your fixture for sizing requirements before selecting linear bulbs as they come in a range of sizes such as t8 and t5, which indicate different bulb circumferences.
  • • Circline bulbs – These are halo shaped bulbs which are used in a range of specialty fixtures to produce more light with a singular fixture.
  • • Reflector bulbs – This type of bulb is cone shaped, and is designed so that the narrow end sits in the base of the fixture while the wide end is directed at whatever it is illuminating. Reflector bulbs are often used indoors in recessed lighting or in outdoor flood lights.

When selecting the right bulbs for your needs, be sure to also consider these important features:

  • • Fluorescent bulbs come in both screw base and plug in fixtures which use either a 2 or 4 pin structure. Make sure you select bulbs with a compatible connector for your fixture.
  • • While some types of fluorescents are dimmable, not all of these bulbs have this ability. If it is important to you that the bulb be dimmable, be sure to check the specifications to confirm that the particular product has that feature.
