Until I am measured I am not known, yet how you miss me when I have flown. – Anonymous
An oldie but goodie, this child’s riddle is a fair way to sum up how most of us view time in our day-to-day lives. Scientists may describe time as a dimension or a fundamental physical quantity interwoven with space itself, but today – right now – it’s simply something we miss when it’s gone.Unfortunately, Father Time is a stingy old goat. Most people picture him as a benevolent old man with a wispy beard and kind eyes, all the while forgetting about that huge scythe he totes around …Time could stand to have a new mascot; something a little more fun and jaunty that doesn’t have anything to do with … reaping stuff.
- 1. The Hobby Clock
It’s nice to be reminded of something you enjoy when you have to check the clock, especially if it tells you you’re late and that your entire day is about to go up in flames. Of course, a trout clock would never do that, though. The only times it knows are when you're leaving to go fishing (now) and when you'll be returning (maybe never).
- 2. The Kitchen Clock
As a backup timer and marker of mealtimes, the kitchen clock can end up being one of the more useful items in a room that is so often ruled by the measure of minutes. It can also serve as a great assistant capable of answering disruptive questions like "When's dinner?" and "How long do I have to stand in the corner for pestering the chef?"
- 3. The Cuckoo Clock
A cynic might quip that it’s like Father Time giving you the bird every hour, but that feeling is sure to fade in the face of fine Black Forest handiwork and the feathery twitter of fantastical German fowl. Authentic cuckoo clocks must be wound and are driven by weights, and often feature tiny beer drinkers that hoist their mugs to the cuckoo's tune - like this one.
