Trendy vs. Classic Style: Savvy Sensibility

Most of us only have so many resources to dedicate to interior design – when we buy a couch we try to buy for life – so how do we capture trendiness and lasting style in one fell swoop?

On its face it seems like an impossible riddle. By definition, something trendy can’t be trendy forever, which means at some point it will fall out of fashion. That’s why most people usually avoid trends when it comes to buying something they hope will last for a while.

Enter ‘Classic’ Style

The crossroads between trendy and traditional may described as classic – a traditional style that never goes out of style. Oddly, though, the concept of “classic” has a way of escaping definition.

If you Google the phrase “what is classic style” you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything concrete. You’ll find examples and images, but the concept is too nebulous to warrant an actual definition. But, maybe we can talk about some ways that classic style might be achieved …

Avoid Patterns

Many patterns (e.g., paisley, argyle or fleur-de-lis) are evocative of a certain time period and so fail at being timeless. It could be argued that a pattern itself can be timeless, so the rule is not absolute, but there are safer ways to avoid looking outmoded.

Solid colors are a good bet when it comes to classic style. Of course, even colors fall prey to trends, but everyone has to draw the line somewhere. Speaking of …

Get Shady

Black, white and all the shades found in between are often synonymous with classic style, yet frequently crop up in trending designs. These colors (or shades, if we’re getting technical) also work in almost any style period, which makes it an easy choice for savvy sensibility.

One should keep in mind, though, that monochrome style is a different animal. It’s timeless in that it’s instantly recognizable, but it takes some effort to pull it off. Zebra stripes and checkered floors are not always as well-received as many would imagine.

Modern Moratorium

Modern and contemporary styles are awesome, but they’re too new to be considered classic. Interestingly, this will change as time marches on, but for now it’s very easy for these styles to, ah, fall out of style.

The best way to stay savvy with modern styles without breaking the bank is to focus on smaller pieces that are a) more inexpensively replaced and b) easier to blend into an overall classic design scheme.
