Summer may be the best time to move, but it can still be a drag if you don’t plan ahead by stocking up on the right moving supplies.

If you’re moving, this is your chance to get ahead of the curve. Use this moving supplies checklist to make sure you’re ready when the truck shows up.

1. Hand Trucks / Carts

Save time and your back muscles by buying or renting a hand truck for moving boxes. Moving is expensive and you’re not going to want to kick in the extra $10 for a rental, but it’s totally worth it if you don’t have access to one.

2. Packing Tape

There are plenty of suitable substitutes for packing tape, but Scotch tape is not one of them. Duct tape or even masking tape will do in a pinch, but using Scotch tape is a gamble.

3. Box Cutter

A sharp utility knife can cut packing time as fast as it can cut tape. Watch your fingers, though.

4. Markers

Labels are a waste of money unless you’re itemizing each box. Otherwise, just scribble where the box needs to go and you’ll figure out the rest later.

5. Newspapers

This makes for great, cheap packing material. Keep in mind, though, that your dishes and glassware will need a good scrubbing to remove the ink once you unpack it.

6. Old Towels / Blankets

These will serve you well when you need to add an extra layer of protection around mirrors, glass tabletops and other large breakables.

You’ll probably be tempted to skip this step with promises of the strength of tempered glass, but don’t be fooled – the extra five minutes it takes is worth the hour in cleanup it’ll save if something shatters.

7. Boxes

Nope, we didn’t forget the boxes. In fact, we have some tips here on the best places to find free boxes.

Between these tips and easy access to local, trusted movers through Porch.com you should be well on your way to saving lots of time and money on moving day.

Make moving easier with Heininger''s "GarageMate" portable hand truck, which features a collapsible design and is rated to 275 lbs.

This convertible hand truck from Milwaukee Hand Trucks is rated to 800 lbs. and is made in the USA.
