Style Spotlight: Rustic Kitchen Accents

Rustic kitchen styles have been showing up all over the interior design scene lately. And with their appealing natural woods, rough looking metals and nature motifs, why not? These designs offer a comfortably worn-in look that that adds depth and character to a space and makes it feel inviting.  But where did this trend come from, and what’s the best way to integrate it in to a typical kitchen design?

Origins of Rustic Style

The rustic look has, of course, been around for quite some time, as its most basic characteristics are primitive in design; however, rustic-styled furniture and décor first emerged as a part of mainstream home fashion in the late 1800s, as America’s wealthy sought to decorate their lavish summer “camps” in the Adirondack mountains.

Up in the woods, there weren’t as many options for décor choices as in more accessible areas, so they began integrating unfinished wood and natural materials around them into their lodges. And, as you would expect, what was in vogue with the rich and famous trickled out into mainstream culture and became a popular trend.

This style, simultaneously driven by necessity and opulence, still holds elements of each in its more contemporary iteration of “modern rustic.” Some modern rustic designs have also taken on a delightfully ironic quality in their imitation of natural materials in cast metal.

Rustic Accents for Your Kitchen

There are nearly infinite ways to add a rustic touch to your kitchen; however, there is an art to incorporating just enough rustic style to give the depth and character of natural elements while still maintaining an elevated style. To create the perfect modern rustic, the best strategy is to add deliberate accents rather than large rustic features. Kitchen storage, kitchen hardware and island lighting all lend themselves particularly well to this application.

Many might not see storage spaces as opportunities for adding style to a space, but a rustic kitchen island or buffet cabinet can be an impactful accent. They do require a decent amount of space to incorporate into your kitchen, though. If floor space is in short supply, consider a hanging pot rack as an alternative. A pot rack can replace an entire cabinet’s worth of shelf space while also serving as a rather grand centerpiece.

Rustic cabinet hardware can also be an ideal accent in a kitchen. Cabinet knobs and drawer pulls act almost as accessories with their distinctive designs and subtle presence. Modest elements such as these help a room come together and feel more cohesive, emphasizing the attention to detail in an overall design. Alternately, for a bolder splash of modern rustic, smaller chandeliers or pendant lights offer ideal lighting for over a kitchen island or breakfast bar and make great platforms for details such as antlers or branch motifs.

Of course, rustic kitchen décor isn’t for every home, and if you have questions about it you can always consult a local interior designer through Porch.com. When used in the right spaces, though, it can contribute to a polished high-end look that still comes off as grounded. So, explore the world of rustic décor and see if outdoor-inspired accents might be a natural addition to your home décor.
