hutches

A classic addition in many homes, hutch furniture is an unsung hero of aesthetics and storage space. Not only can this shelving piggyback on other furniture to provide additional storage without using more floor space, it can also offer an ideal display spot for delicate or fragile items.

Although some disagree about whether the term “hutch” refers to the top addition itself or includes the piece of furniture that it sits atop, there is little disagreement that hutches are one of the most helpful and versatile pieces out there.

Hutch History

Hutches have been around since at least the 18th century when the “hutch” table style became popular as a way to conserve floor space in small rooms. While the original design was more akin to convertible furniture, it still reflected the concept behind the stacking, multiuse pieces we see today.

Hutches emerged in a more modern form in the early 20th century with the “Hoosier cabinet” – a compartmentalized solution to create more functional kitchen storage. From there it was only a matter of time before such a useful setup was used in other spaces, but the original design makes them a natural fit in kitchens even today.

Hutches in the Kitchen

Kitchens are often in need of more storage or work space, and furniture with a permanent configuration doesn’t leave much leeway for rearranging or reorganizing. That’s why adding extra shelves and cabinets by way of a hutch is an ideal solution.

Kitchen hutches are frequently used over china cabinets, buffet serving tables or baker’s cabinets. While a china hutch is usually reserved for displaying fine tableware or other dishes, they can also easily store recipe books, dry goods and other pantry items.

Hutches in the Office

Hutches in office spaces are typically placed over desks or console tables. So, aside from their aforementioned usefulness in taking advantage of vertical space, they also put office supplies within arm’s reach while keeping clutter out of the workspace.

Of course, hutch furniture isn’t limited to use in kitchen or office spaces. There are also TV hutches for media organization, dresser hutches for bedroom décor and storage, and specialty hutches for keeping things tidy in a range of other areas. But, wherever you put them, they’re sure to help your space work for you, which is exactly what a great hutch should do.

This hutch from Home Styles comes in several finish combinations and features brushed steel hardware.
