The Pantone Color Institute – the color authority responsible for the zillions of dazzling squares that fry your eyes every time you try to pick out paint – has released its Home + Interiors color forecast for 2015 to make choosing the perfect color even easier. Mhmmm.

From the subscriber-only color vault known as the Pantone View, color experts have announced nine different color palettes they predict will be the hot ticket next year and come with names like "Serendipity," "Spontaneity" and … wait for it … "Urban Jungle."

What’s a color palette?

Good question! Pantone might describe it as a family of colors chosen to work harmoniously with one another and play well within a particular kind of setting. You might describe it as yet another seemingly random jumble of colors on a floppy piece of cardboard that makes you feel vaguely unsophisticated in a discipline you thought you'd mastered in preschool.

The aforementioned Urban Jungle, for example, has been described as, “Civilizing chaos by marrying animal skin tones with deep blue-greens, a vibrant greenish yellow, plus black and white,” as reported by Home Accents Today, but as you can see in this exclusive scoop by Appliance Retailer the Urban Jungle menagerie of color looks pretty haphazard.

No matter. The lesson here is that defining color palettes – and particularly palettes that work well for you – is a highly interpretive process. So, if you can’t ask the experts, where do you turn?

What’s your favorite color?

This is as good a place to start as any, especially considering you’re the one who’s going to be looking at your new color scheme every day. That’s not to say a lover of red should live in a strawberry nightmare, but it’s not going to hurt to allow your personal preferences to inform your choices. The key is to not become overwhelmed by them … and accidentally end up living in a strawberry nightmare.

What colors are already present and won't be changed?

You can pick furniture to match the paint or you and can pick paint to match the furniture. People will argue the merits of going one direction over another, but if ol' granddad loves the ratty green recliner (Frasier, anyone?) and it's not going anywhere, you may as well work with the grain instead of against it. The same goes for any kind of change you're limited in making, which happens all the time. Maybe you can't rip up the tile or burn your mother-in-law's "gift" of cat art - but you can mute the effect with the clever use of color.

Cat Art "I thought you could hang it in the living room!"

What inspires you?

Are you in love with nature, or the sea? If so, varying hues in green, blue, beige and white may be to your liking. Or, maybe you’re inspired by something more personal; your daughter’s blue eyes, a photo of something beautiful you saw once … anything. Don’t be afraid to use these things as springboards for your own color palette.

What kind of emotion do you want to express, or elicit?

We’ve previously discussed the meaning of color and its power to influence, and this will no doubt directly or indirectly inform your color choices. Your personal feelings about color will move you in various directions, but so may your knowledge of color.

This mid-century accent chair from Skyline Furniture would pair well with a room dressed in Pantone''s "Urban Jungle" palette.

The "Kylee" from Signature Design by Ashley would be right at home as part of Pantone's "Tinted Medley."
