Should I Hide My Kitchen Trash Can?

Whether to have your trash bin stowed in a cabinet or out in the open may seem like a silly question, but the decision can cause a ripple effect that extends far beyond the calm, blue waters of the average kitchen.

Space is always a consideration in that choice, but these days trash cans come in a wide variety of sizes, so you have to admit it’s definitely not the only deciding factor. So, what are the pros and cons when it comes to reining in your rubbish?

Concealed Waste Bins

1. Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Keeping the mess out of sight is probably the biggest motivator for an in-cabinet bin. It’s hard to argue with the fact that a kitchen looks a bit tidier when the trash is tucked away.

2. Spare the Nose, Save the Senses: Placing your waste bin out of sight is also a good way to keep your kitchen area smelling fresher. Lids do a good job, but things can turn sour pretty fast if you’re not mindful of what’s lurking inside.

1. Hide and Seek: Have you ever been a guest in a house where you literally couldn’t find the waste bin? It happens more often than you think.

2. Large Items Ship Separately: One of the biggest problems with hidden trashcans is that it usually means you have to settle for a smaller container. If not, awesome, but everyone knows those little 3-gallon numbers aren’t gonna cut it in a busy kitchen.

3. Enjoy More Time Outdoors: Smaller bins means more trips to the curb, which may be the worst consequence of opting for the concealed can (if you don’t have room for hiding a big bin).

Conspicuous Waste Bins

1. Bigger Might Be Better: It’s a bit of a Catch-22, because having more trash around is never a good thing, but it is nice to cut down on those trips outside and be able to fit bigger items in the bin.

2. Easy Access: Hidden waste bins can invite the constant opening and closing of cabinets, whereas those sitting out in the open are easy to spot and even easier to use.

1. Hostile Occupation: Exposed waste cans take up space that could be otherwise used for … anything. Anything is better, even if it’s just open space.

2. Odor Promoter: More trash usually means more odor and that’s never a good thing, much less when the can is out in the open. This downside can be controlled to some degree, though, with a lid and some deodorizer.

WINNER: Conspicuous bins win if we’re going by the numbers, but it all comes down to preference. As is often the case, it may end up being a battle between style and serviceability.
