Say 'Yay' for Admin Day!

Today is Admin Day (aka Administrative Professionals’ Day) and if you work anywhere near an office you probably know someone who could use a pat on the back.

While it would certainly be an injustice to assume that a day in the life of every admin professional is the same, it’s likely true that they’ve all faced their fair share of grief and deserve a word of thanks. Of course, a “Thank You” and a quarter won’t even get you a cup of coffee these days, so this year we’re elevating thanks to empathy.

What does that mean? It means we are trying to feel your pain, admin pro, when you have to deal with …

the Pushy Telemarketer. The Pushy Telemarketer harangues the admin pro about bulk paper prices, pretending all the while that neither of them are aware of the Internet and access to instant pricing comparisons. Shame on you, Pushy Telemarketer. Quit bothering the admin pro!

… the Forgetful Delivery Person. This is one step beyond the Late Delivery Person, who can more often be forgiven because at least there’s a delivery. The Forgetful Delivery Person mocks the system by showing up with an incomplete delivery, or even empty-handed, which is an injury smothered in insult sauce. Remember your packages, for the sake of admin-pro sanity!

the Appointment Seeker. She shows up without an appointment and then gets testy when she finds out that the world (and our stalwart admin pro) does not immediately bend to her will. Call first next time, Appointment Seeker – the admin pro has exceptional phone skills!

… the Lobby Squatter. Unlike full-on lurkers, the Lobby Squatter has an arguably legitimate purpose for being in the building, but schedules and missed opportunities have left him stranded in the lobby in perpetuity. His only real crime is not having the good sense to leave and try again later, but he will not be forgiven his trespasses on Admin Day!

… the On-Site Solicitor. This is the Pushy Telemarketer in person, easily spotted with an overabundance of samples, brochures and other materials meant to trick unsuspecting admins into forking over the corporate credit card info. But not today! We don’t call them admin pros for nothin’.

… the IT Guy. This is a cable guy with a superiority complex. The one thing an admin pro could always rely on from a cable guy was an apologetic attitude, because they’re literally always wrong about everything. The IT Guy, on the other hand, holds the keys to the kingdom and he knows it. Even so, you should always be nice to the admin pro!

We hope all the administrative professionals out there have a great day today, and every day – thank you for everything that you do!

Kathy Ireland and Bush Furniture apparently know a thing or two about Admin Day ... and desk organizers.
