Navigating the World of King-Size Beds

If you’ve never slept in (or seen) a king-sized bed, it’s kind of hard to imagine how big they really are. They look like they don’t belong on Earth, much less in any average bedroom.

Once you sleep in one, though, it’s hard to return to the land of singles, doubles and queens, so it pays to get acquainted with The King for when you finally decide heaven can’t wait.

California vs. Standard Kings

The first thing you should know is how much mattress you’ll get when you venture into king-size territory.

A “standard” king-size bed is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, while a California king-size bed is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. It may not sound like a huge difference, but the dollars start to stack up when you factor in the cost of sheets, frame and a box spring for the rarer California cousin.

Also, the mathematicians in the crowd will note that the California king is actually the smaller of the two mattresses, if you’re measuring according to total surface area. So, why all the fuss over this West Coast wonder?

California Dreamin’

Said fuss would definitely make more sense if people knew the California king was actually made well before the standard size; in fact, the standard king dimensions were established by the International Sleep Products Association only after the California king created a market for big beds.

And, how did that happen? You could say the California king arrived with Hollywood and the film industry. Newly minted celebrities of the Silent and Classical film eras of the early 20th century wanted huge mattresses, which made everyone else want them, too.

Sneaky, Secret Kings

A lot of people are similarly unaware that standard kings and California kings aren’t the only royalty in the court. In the U.S., we also have the Grand king, which measures a staggering 80 inches wide by 98 inches long.

Yep, the Grand is as wide as a standard king is long. And, if you ever feel the need to own one, you can always find a great contractor to complete that bedroom expansion on Porch.com.

The MODLOFT Furniture "Ludlow" comes in three finish options and features a solid pine-slat base for durable support and added comfort.

The "Danbury" by Williams Home Furnishings stuns in black or white tufted leather with an open foot end that makes this bed feel like it goes on forever.
