Everybody wants a mudroom these days, and for good reason, but you can't DIY a mudroom without a few of the basics.

What are the basics for a mudroom? Well, what’s a mudroom, anyway? It’s like the airlock on a spaceship – a place where you can hang up your spacesuit and decontaminate. Here’s what you need in your airlock:

1. A Water Source

They might use particle neutralizers and depressurization in space, but here on Earth we use soap and water to get clean. That means your mudroom needs a water source.

Normally, this amounts to a sink with a hose attachment. But, some people go with a full-blown shower and others opt for a bucket of soapy water. There are no rules to getting clean, so long as you get there.

2. A Tile Floor

A carpeted mudroom isn’t a mudroom; it’s a Roman Coliseum for carpet, and the carpet always loses.

Your mudroom floor doesn’t have to be tile, but it should be something nonporous and easy to hose down. This is the point of a mudroom; a place that you can get dirty because it’s so simple to clean.

3. A Drain

This has to be the trickiest element of a DIY mudroom, because installing plumbing isn’t something that happens with the snap of the fingers. And, it’s tough to have a mudroom without a convenient way to drain off the water you use for washing up.

That’s why a lot of DIY mudrooms start in the garage or laundry room. Many garages and laundry rooms have drainage, and it may be just a matter of creative positioning to utilize it.

4. Seating / Storage

You need a place to stow your gear when you’re getting cleaned up, and mudrooms are the waypoint between the outside world and the dirty laundry.

Add a hamper to collect dirty clothes and some other storage for things that just kind of stay dirty, like your work boots, shop towels, gardening gloves and overalls.

And, that’s about it. Everything else about a mudroom is flexible, and if you need help with that plumbing you can always consult a local plumber or contractor through Porch.com.

The top-rated Home Styles "Naples" hall tree is popular in mudrooms, so say our customers.

Another mudroom favorite, the "Hobart" by Furniture of America features plenty of storage in a sturdy frame with leatherette seating.
