Okay, so maybe it’s not so fat, but the Monopoly cat is now the newest playing piece in the world’s most popular board game (in terms of sales, anyway). For the first time in the history of the game, owner Hasbro held an Internet contest to allow fans to choose the new piece as well as which piece it would replace.Anyone familiar with the whims of the Internet masses should not have been surprised to find that a cat was selected for addition to the collection. Cat lovers are known to inhabit every intersection of the information superhighway, but there are other likely reasons the feline clawed its way to the top.First, it was the only living selection among the new pieces on offer. The other designs – a helicopter, guitar, diamond ring and robot – all lack the quality of character that comes with a pulse. Plus, dog lovers have enjoyed a monopoly of their own, of sorts, thanks to the introduction of “Scottie dog” to the lineup in the 1950s.What was far less predictable was which piece would be asked to leave. During the final hours of voting the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron all shared a near-equal chance of elimination, but in the end it was the iron that got the boot … so to speak.Although no one can be sure, it’s possible that lobbying from manufacturers saved the shoe and the wheelbarrow. Both Zappos shoe company and Ames True Temper tools manufacturer ran campaigns to rescue their respective likenesses from the dustbin of gaming history.Monopoly, in its most familiar form, has been causing interfamily capitalistic struggles since 1935 and has sold more than 275 million units around the world.ATGStores.com
