Lofty Ambitions Part I: 8 Easy Decor Ideas for Airy Spaces

Not all of us are lucky enough to enjoy a loft, but those who do may have some clues on how we can better fill out the bigger non-loft spaces we do have.

There’s something about a loft that inspires imagination, and it would be great if all home dwellers could harness those ideas and apply them to more conventional areas. So, let’s look at our first four tips in Part I of this series.

Furniture with Mucho Surface Area

What is it about endless miles of counter space that makes us feel so good? Quite simply, it’s the prospect of opportunity – the visual confirmation that, yes, there is even more room for all my STUFF.

How to avoid filling it up with knickknacks and subsequently destroying the magic is a topic for another day. The first goal is to find something impressive that gives you more topside décor options: a coffee table, a kitchen island, a sprawling dining table, whatever.

Hammocks and Other Hanging Seats

We loved swing sets as children and, if we're honest with ourselves, most of us would have to admit we still want one.

So, if you have the room, maybe you should think about a fun indoor addition.

Hammocks may be one of the most popular grownup versions, but there are lots of options. Porch swings, swing chairs and even a no-kidding swing shouldn’t be off the table if you’ve got the space to hang it inside.

Oversized Décor Objects

Whatever it is that you want for decoration, now it can be massive – and sometimes bigger really is better. Oversized items are often a must in large spaces because more diminutive décor can get lost in the atmosphere.

Giant sculptures, large floor lamps and the obligatory vintage floor fan (see above) are just a few items that look right at home in big spaces.

Rugs That Unroll Forever

An area rug is a great way to add sexy snap to a large area without cluttering it up with a bunch of stuff. Big, never-ending rugs are hard to miss, and the right pattern will easily punch up whatever look you’re trying to achieve.

Tune in tomorrow for four more lofty ways you can decorate big, airy spaces, whether it's an actual loft or not.

The "Sedona" cocktail table by Liberty Furniture offers plenty of surface area in a solid design that features a heavy planked top.

The Byer of Maine "Globo" chair comes with a laminated spruce frame, but can also be hung from the ceiling if support is adequate.
