(Kitchen) Island Getaways

Okay, so maybe it’s not the kind of island getaway you’ prefer, but “stay-cations” are the in thing these days and if you’re going to be in the kitchen anyway it may as well be awesome.

Kitchen islands deliver four distinct benefits to any open kitchen space (sorry, galley kitchens!), and we’re not even talking about the ones that are hooked to the water main. Those are great, but they can’t be moved and are more expensive to purchase and install.

The standard kitchen island is as easy to install as putting it where you want it – and it’s even easier to use and enjoy. But, why would you want one?

Stainless Steel-Topped Kitchen IslandMore Workspace

How often have you run out of workspace in the kitchen? It happens all the time! And, truth be told, it will continue to happen once you have an island because we tend to use as much space as is available, but it will nevertheless make things easier.

BONUS: Many feature butcher-block, granite, marble or stainless steel tops that turn the entire space into a handy prep area that’s a snap to use and easy to clean.

Hardwood Kitchen IslandMore Storage

Most kitchen islands feature drawers, cubbies and shelves where you can store additional cookware, spices, dishes, cookbooks and whatever else you’d like to keep close at hand while you’re working your kitchen magic. That way you can have more space to rearrange your cupboards and make your entire work are more efficient.

BONUS: This can be a great place to house an additional wine rack. Just puttin’ that out there.

Kitchen Island SetMore Seating/Hosting Space

Kitchen islands create a natural area for socializing – it’s a place where people can sit, snack, place their drinks, lean in and generally engage in the kitchen action. The kitchen is a very active place and an island can provide a waypoint where people can graze without getting in the way.

BONUS: It makes a great serving area, kids’ seating area and breakfast bar, depending on the occasion.

Mobile Kitchen IslandMore Mobility

Kitchen carts are truly the most mobile in the kitchen island family, but even standard islands can be moved and adjusted – unlike the fancier models that feature plumbing. All of them can be moved, but some of them are designed to be portable, which makes it easier to control the flow through and around the kitchen.

BONUS: If and when it’s ever time to leave you can take it with you, sell it or pass it on to someone who will make good use of it.

ATGStores.com hopes your at-home island getaway helps you squeeze in a little relaxation, at least until you can sneak off for the real thing.

The Powell "Pennfield" Kitchen Island includes a natural finish top, a removable granite cutting surface and ample storage.

This Home Styles double kitchen island includes two stools for the raised dining area, while the lower prep area provides for an uninterrupted work space.
