Browsing for kitchen furniture sets is a different kind of challenge when you’ve got a family full of little ones running about, and when you take on the task you realize very quickly that these areas are filled with accidents waiting to happen.

Don’t wait ‘til it’s too late – take some basic steps to kid-proof your kitchen in a design-conscious way.

Respect the Curve

The easiest way to avoid major cuts and bruises is to consider curved wood pieces for your kitchen table sets. Sharp, pronounced edges on any set of tables and chairs can cause an injury if your kid is playing superhero and sprinting around the house.

Your alternative is using pads until your little caped crusader learns to fly straight, which is a good idea if your style preferences are less curvy, but you’ll have to weigh it against your kitchen and dining area looking like the inside of a pack of Q-Tips for a few years.

Avoid Slippage

Stylish, sleek dining furniture is nice and dandy, but if your furniture is so slippery that your kids can wiggle right off you’ll have to deal with more bumps and bruises. One option is to install some slipcovers on your kitchen furniture sets that complement your color scheme and keep your kids in place.

Increase Counter Space

Many accidents in the kitchen are the result of cramped counters, when the clutter is so excessive that spills and getting stuck with spiky things becomes inevitable. Investing in an island, a larger (or expandable) table or in some pot racks can free up a lot of space.

Of course, this can be in addition to your new rules about cleaning up, should you choose to lay down the law.

Designate Kid-Friendly Lower Shelves

Low kitchen shelves may seem counterintuitive, but it’s all about removing temptation … and in some cases, replacing it with healthy distraction.

Safety locks are one way to go, but another strategy is to load up these shelves and cabinets with things you wouldn’t mind your kids getting hold of if they decide to raid the pantry. It could be a combination of healthy snacks, or it could be random things that are safe that you know they’re not going to want anyway, like baking ingredients and cereal that doesn’t have any sugar in it.

Follow these tips and you can worry less about your kitchen furniture sets causing sprains and pains, and more about where you’re going to hide the cookie jar.
