How to Repair a Hole in Leather Furniture

leather furniture,leather sofas

There’s little else more luxurious than sinking into the soft, buttery goodness of a fine leather sofa, and there’s little else more tragic than hearing that muffled “POCK!” as the keys in your back pocket punch through the cushion.

So, what now?

Option #1: Leather Filler

The first choice for many people is to use leather filler and what’s called a “subpatch.” It works like this:

1. Stuff the hole with additional padding so that you can work in the area without matting it down.
2. Place the subpatch, adhesive side up, inside the hole and on top of the new padding.
3. Press the leather down onto the patch and then use a blow dryer to heat it so the adhesive sticks to the leather.
4. Cut out a piece of leather to fill the hole and affix it with heat as you did in Step 3.
5. Use leather filler to clean up the edges around the hole.
6. Allow the filler to dry and then sand the entire area using a fine-grain sandpaper to remove any edges.
7. Use a paintbrush to paint the area with specialty paint sold at leather shops.

Option #2: Leather Repair Kit

Leather repair kits are sold at most leather shops and are fairly easy to use. Questions arise, however, regarding the repair durability, especially if the area repaired is in high use – like the cushion. Nevertheless, it works like this:

1. Use the included compound to cover the damaged area according to the kit’s instructions.
2. Cover the damaged area with “grain papers” as instructed.
3. Slowly remove the grain papers to reveal the repaired area.

Option #3: Replacement

Punctured or torn cushions may be replaceable and a quick call to the manufacturer will set you straight on that score. Or, you can replace the whole thing if you’re of the type that feels uncomfortable with less-than-perfect leather. And, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Option #4: Craigslist!

Holey leather is sacred treasure to even the most discerning Craigslist cruiser and you’ll have no trouble finding a taker for your flawed furniture. Just make sure you announce the defect and price your piece accordingly.

We hope this helps you with the tough decisions that come with a newfound gouge in the glorious grain of your gorgeous leather furniture.
