There are a lot of ways you can spruce up the interior or exterior of your home with lighting, and to get inspired all you have to do is take a gander at the Helix Garage in Lexington, Kentucky.

A few years ago, the Helix received an exterior facelift that was hated by pretty much everyone. Called Lexington’s ugliest parking garage, it was doubly hated because it was built in place of Union Station, a Lexington landmark since 1907. But …

A recent upgrade that included a $100,000 LED exterior lighting package changed all that, and now everyone loves the Helix!

Okay, so that’s probably not true – you don’t replace Union Station with a parking garage and not stoke some serious rage – but it does look significantly better, and the lesson is that you can do the same with a lot less money.

Exterior Lighting Effects

Pathway lighting and landscape lighting are two of the easiest ways to add a level of depth to your home that simply can’t exist in the dead of night. Plus, adding accent lighting to your façade can double as a safety and security precaution.

For flair, you can go the way of the Helix and use bold colors, or you can keep it traditional with well-placed white bulbs.

Interior Lighting Effects

Interior lighting effects can be created in myriad ways, but can be clustered into three main groupings: plug-in lights like lamps, installed lighting like pendants and light switching.

There’s a difference between your primary lighting – the lighting you need to see – and the accent lighting you add to create décor effects. Exercise freedom with color, placement and design and you’ll find you have new ways to complement any mood or event.

You can add even more variability by putting these lights on different circuits and then adding a dimmer to give you multiple ways to change your décor without having to rearrange the furniture or buy more knickknacks.

Desired Lighting Effects

Color, patterns, light and shadow – they’re all on your palette when you’re creating lighting effects. You can use colored shades or bulbs to create mood and tone, or focus on placement to create varying degrees of depth and drama.

If you can think of lighting as a tool you can use to transform your décor, you’ll realize it’s a medium that literally glows with opportunity.
