Throwing parties to watch your favorite movies and TV shows is nothing new, and now that there's even more great stuff to watch thanks to Netflix and other streaming services the art of hosting the perfect movie party has never been more essential.
It doesn’t mean your cinematic soiree has to be more than casual – some of the best movie parties are at their best when they’re a shoes-off affair – but you still want to make your guests feel at home.
Here are some tips that will help:
1. Plush, Portable Seating
The couch alone isn’t going to cut it at the big premiere. And, unless you have a home theater (or a TV cart) you’ll probably be watching your feature where seating is limited.
Bean bags, folding chairs, camp chairs and even ottomans – keeping things cozy is the only catch. Putting style before comfort here will most definitely end in a bad review.
2. Dimmable Accent Lighting
Watching a movie in total darkness may be ideal in a small group, but when people are (hopefully quietly) getting up and down to take phone calls, refresh drinks and fill popcorn bowls, it’s good to have a little lighting to guide the way.
Set the mood with dimmable lighting in your floor lamps at the room’s periphery and you won’t have to worry about stopping the whole show with glaring lights from above.
3. Pillows & Throws
Getting everyone in front of the TV may call for a tight fit. Pillows and throws are perfect for this situation. Pile them up and let your guests take their pick.
Just make sure they’re not so delicate they can’t take a stain or two, because people miss their mouths more than you’d imagine when they try to eat in the dark. Speaking of …
4. Cups & Bowls
One of the best things about movie parties is that the serveware doesn’t have to get any more complicated than this.
Make your snacks in big batches and then let your guests serve themselves with their own bowls. Same goes for the soda.
We hope you enjoy the show!
