Have you ever heard of a pomander? If not, you’re in for a real treat if you like awesome, inexpensive holiday DIY projects that will beautify your home and make it smell like a Christmas bomb detonated in your living room.

Recipes and the like are usually the province of the Lazy Chef, but since she’s out on the town trying to discover more fun holiday recipes (and because this isn’t something you eat), she passed it on to us to share.

The Basic Tools

  • Toothpick, or other pointy object

  • Paper bag

  • Twine, or some kind of string/ribbon

  • Felt-tipped pen (optional)

The “Ingredients”

  • 3 oranges

  • 1 oz. whole cloves

  • 3 tbsp. cinnamon

  • 3 tbsp. nutmeg

  • 3 tbsp. allspice

The Method

Find a comfortable space where you can sit down to work. Take an orange in one hand and your toothpick in the other and proceed to poke holes in the orange. You can poke randomly or attempt to make a design (with or without the felt-tipped pen) – just as long as you make a lot of holes.

These will serve as the “pilot holes” for the clove stems. Push the cloves into the orange until you fill up all the holes. You should be able to completely cover 3 oranges with 1 oz. of whole cloves.

Once finished, fill the paper bag with spices and drop in the oranges. Shake vigorously – but not so vigorously you rip the bag. Feel free to substitute spices if your version of Christmas doesn’t smell like cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. You can also use other thick-skinned fruits to experiment with different scents.

The spices will coat the cloves as juice from the orange leaks out around them. Don’t worry if the orange itself is not coated.

Your Christmas bombs are now fully armed. Loop them with twine and hang them wherever you like. NOTE: These are strong and get stronger as they dry.

ATGStores.com hopes everyone has a happy, great-smelling holiday season.
