Fall Asleep Faster, Get More Sleep

A raft of new studies on sleep deprivation have cropped up over the past year in the Journal of Sleep Research and other well-regarded publications, and all are in agreement that kids are not getting enough sleep – a problem already exhaustively documented in adults.

So, the conclusion that we can draw is that pretty much everyone in the U.S. that needs sleep isn’t getting it, but our lives aren’t going to slow down just because the white coats decide to flap their gums about it. We need answers!

Well, what we really need are more vacations and later start times for everything, but we also have to take what we can get. So, what can we get?

We can get to sleep faster, which ultimately means we’ll be getting more sleep.

1. Whale Song

Okay, so the sound of whales serenading one another is a personal preference, but a noise-cancelation device of some kind can help you get to sleep faster. If you do decide to give one a try, keep in mind that it can take some adjustment before it starts conking you out.

2. More Comfortable Beds

It may be as easy as flipping your mattress. Mattress experts (yep!) recommend flipping new mattresses every three months, but use your judgment. Do you feel the mattress sagging? If so, flip it. Flip it real good – and by that we mean rotate it, because a lot of mattresses aren’t designed to actually be flipped over.

But, if you need a new mattress you may find it worth your while to upgrade the whole bed. Even a sturdier (or bigger) frame can put you in a position to score a comfier mattress that will help you fall asleep faster.

3. Black-Out Curtains

City dwellers and third-shift workers are plenty familiar with black-out curtains (or even noise-reducing curtains), but they can be useful in most any situation where a person isn’t getting enough sleep.

Light pollution is on the rise and for some people it only takes a glimmer of light from a neighbor’s annoying motion-triggered security lamps or the searchlight of a nosy police helicopter to ruin a great night’s sleep.

4. Temperature Control

For whatever dastardly reason, the powers that be have not seen it fit to bestow everyone with an HVAC system, which means some of us have to improvise.

Controlling your bedroom’s temperature can be as easy as installing an air conditioning unit or ceiling fan, or something even simpler like a dehumidifier or space heater. What’s more, even if you do have central heating and air, you can save money with these home comfort appliances rather than adjusting the thermostat.
