Duvets vs. Comforters

The battle between comforters and duvets may be the softest ever fought, but it remains one of the fiercest – at least in the world of bedding.

Duvets and comforters look and act almost exactly alike: a big, fluffy blanket that rests on the very top of a bed. The differences, however, are actually quite significant and it pays to know before you decide to buy because they aren’t always the cheapest things in the world.

Duvet vs. Duvet Cover

Wait, what? Aren’t these the same thing? Actually … no, and this is one of the biggest differences between a duvet and a comforter. Technically, the duvet is the filling inside the duvet cover, and both together are usually referred to as the duvet.

In other words, duvets are a two-piece affair while comforters are one solid piece of material. This is important to remember, because duvets and duvet covers are often sold separately, which can make them seem comparable in cost to a comforter when they are anything but.

Cover-Up Tactics

If someone asked you how to use a blanket you’d probably have a laugh and then promptly dial the loony bin, but the question isn’t as crazy as you think – at least when it comes to duvets and comforters.

Duvets are designed to be the whole kit and caboodle when it comes to covering up; just you and the duvet, with no other bedding involved. Comforters, on the other hand, are supposed to be used with sheets, which arguably gives the duvet an upper hand when it comes to making the bed …

Care & Cleaning

… but where the duvet may lose points for some is that you have to take the stuffing out before you wash it, whereas with comforters you (usually) just throw them in the machine. And, getting a duvet back into a duvet cover can be a little like squeezing a marshmallow into a piggy bank – just a wee bit frustrating.

But, perhaps it's not a huge price to pay for being free of a top sheet …

Cost Comparison

Of course, it always depends. Quality, size, materials and style all play a role in how much a duvet or comforter will cost. But, assuming all of these factors are the same and you’re invested in the best quality available, the duvet will likely be more expensive.

ATGStores.com hopes this look at duvets versus comforters helps if you’re trying to decide on the right fit for your bedroom style.
