DIY Corporate Office Design

Bringing work home is always the pits, so it would stand to reason that bringing office design into the home would be just as bad, but a lot of things are changing in Cube City – and sometimes for the better.

Office design – or redesign, in most cases – is big business around the world. In Interior Design’s “Top 100 Giants” listing of top design firms, office designers make up the largest slice of the pie this year, which means a lot of people are pouring money into the sector.

Why? Well, there are lots of reasons, but you can bet employee satisfaction and the resulting improvement in work efficiency is a big part of it. And, there’s no reason why the positive changes at the corporate level can’t be employed in the home office.

Let’s take a look at some leading trends.

1. Mod(ular) is in.

It’s true that contemporary design is taking the office world by storm, but even more notable is that a lot of companies are seeking to create multiuse spaces by employing modular and/or mobile furniture.

In the home office, this most easily translates to collapsible pieces and furniture on wheels, but another strategy is to make the entire “office” mobile so you can work anywhere in the home.

2. Go with the clean look.

Studies abound that detail how clutter reduces efficiency, and there are countless ways to combat the chaos, but one simple trick can have a permanent decluttering effect: Hide all the wires.

Use cable organizers or other crafty concealment ideas to get those wires out of your line of sight and you’ll be that much closer to home office Zen.

3. Dream of open spaces.

Employees have long despised the open office layout, but design efficiency and lower costs oblige companies to keep implementing them. At home, though, a little more legroom may be just what you need.

Instead of keeping your back to the wall, try moving your desk to the center of the room and see how you like it. You might be surprised at how freeing it makes you feel.

Give these ideas a go to improve your home office, or ask a pro designer via Porch or Decorist to get even more helpful tips.
