Chinese New Year Meets Valentine's Day

The moving target that is the Chinese New Year – or Lunar New Year – came and went on January 31st, sharing a weekend with the Super Bowl and therefore not gaining as much traction as it so obviously deserves.

A horse is a Horse, of course of course.

But, we have not forgotten! This year is the Year of the Horse, which some astrologers say is a time of both personal improvement and conviction – the year you’ll make something of yourself and stand up for your beliefs.

It also means it’s your year if you’re a Horse in the Chinese zodiac. Horses have birthdates in 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990 and 2002. If one of these is your birth year – jackpot! You may want to buy a lottery ticket, go on an adventure or try your hand at something new with confidence that good things will result.

Yet soothsayers warn that Horses may want to avoid other Horses for fear of throwing off the yin-yang balance; in other words, your untamed passions could cause an astrological stampede! This isn’t always the case, of course, but a horse is a Hor— ah, you know the drill.

Ah, but a Wood Horse is … what is a Wood Horse, again?

There are five “heavenly branches” of Horse in the zodiac and 2014 is the Year of the Wood Horse. Astrologers take that as a sign of combustibility – a time in the world marked by rapid and sometimes explosive change.

If the Polar Vortex and Justin Bieber’s fall from grace aren’t proof of that, we don’t know what is, yet there is still cause for hope …

A full moon on Valentine's Day makes it a “confluence of celebrations.”

That’s how some astrologers are describing this year's Valentine’s Day, which also happens to fall two weeks after the Chinese New Year – on the day of the Lantern Festival! Add a full moon and it seems even the loneliest heart must be warmed by celestial sentiment.

What’s the meaning of all this? Well, it’s all up for interpretation, but if you’re a Horse looking for love and good fortune this could really be your year.

ATGStores.com wishes everyone a happy Chinese New Year and good fortune no matter where you fall on the zodiac.

With Valentine''s Day falling on such an auspicious date this year this zodiac wheel necklace from Design Toscano might make a thoughtful gift for those who are astrologically inclined.

Very apropos of the Year of the Wood Horse, this wooden horse from IMAX Worldwide is carved of albizia wood in the folk-art tradition.
