Beach, Bath & Beyond

The beach-themed bathroom seems a bit of a mystery when you stop to think about it. Why the beach? It’s almost like there’s something buried in our collective subconscious that reminds us of some joyous visit to a bathroom at the beach.

Of course, anyone who’s actually had to use a bathroom at the beach (that wasn't in a hotel) knows it’s not necessarily awesome. So, if it’s not that, what is it?

Maybe it’s because we want our bath experience to be a little vacation from the demands of the day, which makes sense and actually sounds rather nice. Fortunately, it’s not hard to bring the beach into your bathroom on most any kind of budget.

Shells, Shells, Shells

It’s hard to summon nostalgia for the beach without some seashells and the like: conch shells, coral, clam shells, sand dollars, starfish, etc. Art depicting shells is widely available, but you can also buy real seashells for pennies and present them in a decorative bowl or clear vase.

You may reach a point where it might seem like a good idea to get a big seashell and use it as a decorative bowl to hold even more seashells. There’s no rule against this level of beach intensity just as long as you’re aware that going overboard (wink, wink) is entirely possible.

Nautical Art / Bath Décor

There is so much nautical art in the world it has its own category and you can easily use the imagery you find to set the mood or the theme. It could be boats and old sea dogs, landscapes and sunsets, oceanic charts and ship blueprints, lighthouses, wildlife, coastal architecture - whatever you want.

Other nautical décor includes rigging and rope netting, vintage flotation devices, ship parts (anchors, flags, cleats, etc.), diving equipment and compasses. You can then add bath towels and a shower curtain in either coordinating colors or pastels to tie these items together or provide a backdrop for them to stand against.

Decorative Soaps

Soap shaped like seashells and seahorses. Say that 10 times really fast.

Nautical Lighting

You can find all kinds of ship’s lamps and lanterns that will lend authenticity to your theme, and you can also pick out coordinating nautical lamps that reinforce established beach styles. White or pastel latticework, cork and driftwood lamp bases add a lot of character.

Nautical light fixtures for the wall or ceiling can also give your bathroom a calm below-decks feel. Consider using outdoor fixtures inside to achieve a more genuine look.

White / Pastel Colors

Painting the entire bathroom may be a stretch, but you can still capture the emotion of the ocean by painting your trim, vanity and cabinetry in a light complementary color. Pastel yellows, blues and pinks go well with varying shades of white or gray to recreate the feel of South Florida and other coastal idylls.

Whether you’re a landlubber or an old sea captain, we welcome you to search for just the right thing to make your beach-themed bath a treasure known across the seven seas ... or at least around the neighborhood.
