There are few items so affordable, useful and essential to a living space than a kitchen island and, if you don’t have one, the best way to look at it is as an opportunity for easy home improvement.
Now, it could be that you don’t have room for a kitchen island, and if that’s the case we hope it’s because you have the most adorable galley kitchen in the world and no real need for one.
But, if you do have the room and are wondering how a kitchen island can help you take advantage of the space, well, we have some ideas …
1. You can add more seating.
Kitchen islands don’t always come with bar stools, but you’ve got plenty of options if you decide you want to add a couple. Don’t think you have enough room for extra seats? Some island designs offer stools that store easily in all kinds of creative ways (see right).
2. You get more counter space.
Even though we’re giving it second place, this is probably the first reason why people invest in kitchen islands. And, it’s a good reason. Kitchen counter space is like the money in your wallet – the more you have the more you use, until you eventually run out.
3. You get more storage space.
Bring on the pots, pans, cookbooks, colanders and all that other bulky stuff that you're always digging through to get to your spatula every time you make eggs. Put it all on the island and forget about it until you need it, and see how much easier cooking life can get.
4. You get more prep space.
Nope, this is definitely not the same as #3. Kitchen island counter space is a generic thing you sacrifice for things like schoolbooks, purses, mail, dishes, art projects and whatever else life throws your way that you don’t want to catch.
Prep space is what you need more of when you cook, and a kitchen island delivers in spades.
5. You create a place to socialize.
Where do your guests hang out when you’re in the kitchen mixing cocktails and putting the garnish on the hors d’oeuvres? If you don't have an island, they’re probably adrift in the sea of your living room ... or rooting through your medicine cabinet.
6. You can make all of this mobile.
Who in their right mind wouldn’t want an island on wheels? Try it and see what you think!
