6 Tips for Lasting Bathroom Freshness

Nothing gets dirtier than a bathroom and the Scrubbing Bubbles are a fantasy, so we need some new tactics to keep the bathroom fresher longer.

(Okay, so the Scrubbing Bubbles are real, but there's definitely a difference of opinion when it comes to how hard a bubble should scrub.)

So, what can we do? Here are five things you can try that should help keep your bathroom in better shape in between deep cleanings:

1. Get a hamper.

Dirty clothes have a place, and that place is not on the bathroom floor. Everyone agrees with this, but to exercise control you need a place for them to go.

Small bathroom? No problem: Just use a mesh laundry bag that you can hang behind the door or from the towel bar. The idea is to contain the situation so it doesn’t turn into a smelly eyesore.

2. Don’t bunch/fold wet towels.

Some people like to reuse their towels and that’s no crime, but there’s a right way and wrong way to hang a wet towel, especially if you don’t have a towel warmer.

If you’re going to reuse your towel, hang it over the shower rod or on a towel bar fully spread; otherwise, it won’t dry rapidly enough to prevent mildew that will stink up your bathroom and ruin the towel.

3. Mix and use a daily shower cleaner.

Scrubbing Bubbles aside, a daily shower cleaner will save you time between deep cleaning and can even stop mold and mildew in their tracks if you’re vigilant.

You can find a powerful recipe on themakeyourownzone.com, which is good to do because that stuff can get expensive, but there are lots of different mixes out there if you find that one too intense.

4. Use air freshener.

This is just a nice touch and the plug-ins make it easy. If plug-ins aren’t your thing, you can try homemade potpourri, candles or a daily spray.

Even a bathroom that’s not spotless seems cleaner when it smells like lilacs. That’s an indisputable scientific fact.

5. Wash out the sink after every use.

Leaving hair and globs of toothpaste in the sink is a stone’s throw away from out-and-out barbarism. It’s a declaration of war against civility. It’s domestic lawlessness.

It’s also super-easy to avoid: Wipe the sink out when you’re done. Boom. Done. You can even use your hand if you don't want to muck up the washcloth. Just be sure to wash your hands last.

6. Hire a local service to do a little light cleaning.

For some, cleaning the bathroom is the one thing on the to-do list that never gets done. Kryptonite comes in many forms and a dirty bathroom can make even the strongest superheroes weep for justice. If that sounds like you, try visiting Porch.com for a local cleaning service that can focus on whatever area is giving you trouble.

Use these six tips and you’ll enjoy your bathroom more while having to clean it less. Win-win!
