First off – Happy Thanksgiving, everyone, and we hope you're enjoying our early Black Friday deals!

Now, if your family can have a fun, festive Thanksgiving meal in a “free-for-all” seating plan, then congratulations – you have one of the most amazing families ever. But, for those who like to plan, we've got some great tips for you.

Quickly, here are five last-minute seating strategies you can use to keep the Thanksgiving peace:

1. Know your guests.

This, of course, is where you should always start. Create space for people who may be on the outs, and try to accommodate those folks who you know will want to visit during the meal.

Plus, it also helps to know the little things, like if someone is left-handed or needs to leave the table frequently to take business calls or use the restroom. Seat them in a place that makes it easier on everyone.

2. When in doubt, deploy the kiddie table.

Letting kids sit at the “grownup table” is all well and good, but sometimes munchkin management can be difficult amidst all the other Thanksgiving duties.

The kiddie table doesn't have to be a demotion, even for the older lads and lasses. Class up the seating a little – and perhaps find an adult willing to join – and it should be smooth sailing for all.

3. Set place cards.

Place cards make it easier for people to follow your lead, which is important when you've got so many irons in the fire. And, it goes without saying that it makes people feel special, which is a great bonus.

Hint: Make the cards extra nice, and maybe they'll end up as souvenirs.

4. Don’t crowd the plate(s).

Sometimes things get too cozy and there's no helping it, but with a little planning you can soften the edges. Arrange your place settings with an eye for how well they'll work with the food service once it starts.

Also, you can try and make more space, even if that means setting up a second (or third) table. The benefits will usually outweigh the costs.

5. Know your helpers (and those who will insist on helping).

There are some people who can’t relax on Thanksgiving because they’d prefer to lend a hand. Make it simple for them to serve by seating them where they can pivot quickly toward the kitchen, because they’re going to be in and out of there all day, anyway.
