5 Most Kid-Destructible Home Décor Items

Sometimes we need to be reminded that there is a time and place for everything, and that no matter how much we may want X we might better off waiting because it will be destroyed roughly four minutes after we get it out of the wrapping.

There are some things that are indestructible, and then there are things that are “kid-destructible” – which is pretty much the exact opposite. Here are five home décor items that have no chance whatsoever of making it past the warranty date when faced with kids, pets and real life in general:

1. The White Couch

On some level, it seems odd these things even exist. As lovely as white couches are – and they are indeed quite lovely – for some people it’s like wearing a wedding dress to a winemaking class. This kind of invitation to disappointment should come with a warning label.

2. The Glass-Topped Coffee Table

The invisible coffee table exists on a sliding scale of kid-destructibility. For example, it’s hard to argue that an inlaid-glass coffee table is any less safe than one made of anything else. But, then there are those that are basically just slabs of glass on legs; trouble from every angle, so to speak.

3. The Delicate Floor Lamp

By design, floor lamps are not meant to be bumped, wobbled or wiggled. Long in the neck and petite of foot, many floor lamps have a dancer’s grace and demand the same measure of calm during their glittering performance.

4. The White Rug

Perhaps not as risky as The White Couch (or its diabolical cousin, The White Leather Couch), the white rug can still fall prey to the ravages of … basically anything that isn’t the same shade of white. Thankfully, though, lighter rugs are often woven of very tough material and there are plenty of cleaning options for when things get really nasty.

5. The Chandelier

If at no other time, this is a situation for which calls to “Hang ‘em high!” are celebrated rather than dreaded. While impervious to most land-based attacks, a crystal chandelier is no match for the wild pitch, the high Frisbee toss or, heaven forfend, the accidental potato-gun discharge.

This crystal chandelier by Gallery does NOT feature a force field.

The top-selling "Kiefer" rattan torchiere from Aspire Home Accents balances delicate looks with durable design.
