5 Biggest Complaints in Your Neighborhood

security lighting, fencing, trash cans

Ah, the neighbors – sometimes there’s no winning with them, no matter how much time and love you put into your home. But, sometimes you can get on their good side, and with very little effort.

So, what is it about your house that’s really rubbing your neighbors the wrong way? There are lots of obvious factors (the people, the neighborhood, etc.), but you don’t have to guess at people’s pet peeves – all you need to do is look at the court records.

From least to greatest, here are the things that make your neighbors the maddest:

5. Encroaching on Property Boundaries

This can happen in a lot of different ways, but there are some common examples of infringement that will sound familiar:

- Trees that grow over the property line
- Trash and debris blowing over the line
- Parking issues

PRO TIP: Keep your vegetation trimmed and let your neighbors know when you’re having guests or a party when parking may become an issue.

4. Visual Nuisances

It may come as no surprise that your trash can tick off the neighbors even when it’s not blowing into their yard. They don’t want to see it in your yard, either.

PRO TIP: Get trashcans with secure lids, and beware of raccoons. And, try to keep the yard mowed.

3. Kids

Good or bad, the fact is that 21 percent of all complaints are about your kids. Well, your kids, dear reader, are undoubtedly amazing, but there are some bad apples out there that like to invade the neighbor’s property, and even rip it up from time to time.

PRO TIP: Explain to your kids the value of sovereignty, and also give your neighbors’ kids a break – it might encourage them to do the same.

2. Pet Potty

Remember “A Christmas Story” and the Bumpus’s dogs tearing through Ralphie’s kitchen? That’s hopefully as bad as gets for anyone out there.

PRO TIP: Don’t let your pets do their business on the neighbors’ lawn. This sums up the majority of all complaints.

1. Your Epic House Party

Yep, you guessed it – noise is the biggest legal complaint, taking up 48 percent of the docket in any given municipality. And, that makes sense. It’s hard to be totally silent, and for some unreasonable folks it’s the only thing that will satisfy them.

PRO TIP: Build a fence, if you can afford it. Teach your dog not to bark through the night. And, disguise your “warning” about your upcoming party with an invitation. That way, the neighbors will feel included, and also know when to expect the ruckus.

Good luck!
