5 Best Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo,outdoor games

Of course, when you’re talking about the best way to do anything, it may involve fewer hard facts and more anecdotal evidence, and so it goes with the best way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

After all, here in the U.S. it’s basically an excuse to tipple, so a lot of lists much like this one will just have “tequila” listed five times.

You’re only gonna find that once on this list, but it is first, so it does take a position of prominence. Now, without further ado, here’s what you should try doing on Cinco de Mayo this year:

1. Drink Tequila

Shoot it, sip it, upside-down tip it – it doesn’t matter on Cinco de Mayo. While the celebration has absolutely nothing to do with tequila, or drinking in general (Mexicans traditionally enjoy a flavored water called agua fresca on Cinco de Mayo), it’s now a time-honored American tradition to throw back a few margaritas on May 5th.

Well, maybe it’s more of an excuse than a tradition, but nobody should be splitting hairs on Cinco de Drink-O.

2. Dress Up

There’s a right way and a wrong way to do this, and being able to recite the history and identify the major players in the Battle of Puebla is going keep you on the right side of things.

Of course, that’s only if you’re dressing up as a tribute to Mexican history, as is Mexican tradition on this holiday. If you’re dressing up as a ghost, a Transformer or some other random thing, there’s not much chance someone’s going to mistake you for an agitator.

3. Eat Mexican Food

Oh boy, this may be the best thing about Cinco de Mayo. No one needs a reason to eat yummy, delicious tacos and burritos, but having one doesn’t hurt.

To make it even more special, you can use the occasion to seek out some traditional dishes that you’ve never tried before. A staple of Puebla is mole poblano, so keep your eye out for it as an authentic treat.

4. Enjoy Mexican Music

There’s nothing quite like listening to a Mariachi band on Cinco de Mayo. You can’t help but get off your seat and shake your maraca a little.

Of course, there are other traditional Mexican folk styles you may also enjoy if performances are available in your neck of the woods. Check local listings for Cinco de Mayo events to learn more.

5. Attend Parades

Parades are one of the most popular ways Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and it’s all the rage in Puebla. There are lots of floats, dancing, singing and people in costume raising a big, happy ruckus.

So, if you really want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo the right way, you’ll dress up, have a sip of tequila with your mole poblano, find a parade and go listen to music while you dance the day away. Arriba!
