4 Must-Have Camping Items

When it comes to camping necessities it all depend on what kind of camping you’re doing, so let’s clarify that right out of the gate – we’re talking about actual, no-kidding camping out in the wilderness with the bugs and the bears.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with glamping (that’s “glamour camping,” for the uninitiated) or car camping, but it’s fair to say that your needs are a little different on those types of excursions. No one’s going to miss a corkscrew on a true wilderness trip, but it could absolutely ruin the party at a glampsite.

So, what do you need to grab before you head out into the sticks to commune with nature? Assuming you know enough to take plenty of food and water, you’ll also need these four things:

1. Tent

Tents come in a lot of different varieties, but you can break them down according to cost, weight/size and ease of assembly.

In some ways, your budget will dictate how much distance you can put between yourself and civilization. Your superhuman camping skills will only get you so far in a $30 tent, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend your mortgage payment, either.

2. Sleeping Bag

Overstuffed, rollup sleeping bags are hard to pack and carry. These days you can find a good quality “stuff sack” for next to nothing, although you’ll want to be sure it’s rated to handle your camping climate. It may be summer, but it can still get pretty brisk at night at the right altitude.

3. Backpack

Size and support are the keys to finding a good backpack. Your natural inclination will be to fill it up all the way, so you want to make sure that when you do you’ll still be able to carry it. A backpack with an internal frame is recommended if you intend on carrying large loads for an extended period of time.

4. GPS / Locator Device

Diehard outdoor enthusiasts may call this cheating, but wilderness camping is no joke. Anything can happen and it’s not just about getting lost. If disaster strikes and you can’t make it back to town on your own, it will help to either a) be able to give someone coordinates or b) have a signal for someone to track.

ATGStores.com hopes you have many safe and enjoyable camping trips this summer.

The Ledge Sports ultra-compact stuff sack is water resistant and features a contour-adjustable hood, anti-crawl zipper stops and a compression sack for easy carry and storage.

Waist straps, a sternum strap and a multi-point adjustable frame make this pack from Tool Pak easy to carry lots of gear with maximum comfort.
