The ugly truth of the matter is that some pretty dirty things happen in the bathroom – which makes sense because it’s where we go to get clean – so keeping it smelling sweet isn’t always that easy.
And, it might distress you to know you may be missing some the biggest trouble spots in there, because all manner of evil dank lurks just below the surface, where your potpourri is powerless.
Here are three tricks you can try to freshen your bath that may have slipped by you.
1. Deep-clean the drains.
Dante’s “Divine Comedy” details the nine circles of Hell, but since it was written in Italian you may have missed that your bathroom drains are, in fact, the ninth circle.
For a fresher smell, pour a concoction of lemon juice and/or essential oils, baking soda and boiling water down the drain. How much to mix? You’re pouring it down the drain – go crazy.
2. Wash the bath mats.
None of us are nearly as clean as we think, even when we step out of the shower, and gravity guarantees that the worst of it ends up buried in the bath mats.
To clean, wash your mats with cold water and air dry, so you don’t melt the backing with too much heat.
3. Replace your toilet’s wax ring.
If you notice an advanced level of funk and constant moisture around the base of your toilet, it could be that you need to replace your toilet’s wax ring (aka O-ring), which is located under the base where it meets the floor at the back.
To replace, 1) shut off the toilet’s water supply line, 2) remove the mounting bolts, 3) detach the supply line, 4) lift and move the toilet, 5) remove the old ring and wax, and 6) insert the new ring.
