10 Last-Minute Holiday Entertaining Tips

The time has come for another round of holiday hosting, and this year you’ve triple-checked every detail so nothing is overlooked – but we’re going to go over it one more time just to make sure.

What are your biggest challenges when you host a holiday party? What are you always forgetting, or forgetting to do? Use this list and say goodbye to those pesky last-minute hiccups.

1. Stock extra batteries and a charger.

You just never know. You might need a fresh set for the TV remote, your trusty Wi-Fi speaker or a surprise gift that comes with “batteries not included.” Make sure you’re ready with the Eveready and keep your party powered.

2. Butter.

It’s a scientific fact that you can never have enough butter. Or cheese. Let's go with butter and cheese.

3. Remember the teetotalers.

When stocking beverages, try to liven up the selection for the designated drivers with something besides soda. A fizz-filled nonalcoholic punch or spritzer is always a nice touch.

4. Light a candle in the bathroom.

A strategically placed candle is a classy move, and your guests will appreciate not having to fumble for the switch when someone forgets to leave the bathroom light on.

5. Shovel the walk and sprinkle some salt, but not too early.

Timing is everything when it comes to snow removal. If you do it too early, you might have to do it twice, and if you do it too late … well, then it’s too late.

6. Find more folding chairs.

There’s more to holiday seating than having enough of it; you also have to be able to deploy it where you need it. That’s why folding chairs are a must, even if you have plenty of everyday seating options.

7. Play some Christmas music.

Love it or hate it, Christmas music is a holiday peacekeeper. Everyone expects to hear it, at the very least, and you can tune it out as easily as you can enjoy it.

8. Tell your neighbors.

If you’re hosting several guests, give your neighbors the holiday gift of knowing there will be a few extra cars parked in the area (and maybe a little extra noise). They’ll appreciate it, and it may help them plan for their own holiday hosting.

9. Let the games begin.

This goes for both kids and adults. Have plenty of fun options on hand to fill the gaps in conversation. A deck of cards (Against Humanity?), a karaoke machine and a stack of board games can take any party to the next level.

10. Create space ahead of time for extra stuff.

Coats, kids, gifts, wine, handbags – your guests are going to bring more than their sparkling personalities. Make sure you have room set aside so you don’t have to worry about it as they arrive and depart.

Use these tips and you’re sure to make your celebration a little more magical for you and your guests – happy holidays!
