Light switches are some of the essential pieces of electrical hardware that plays both a functional and aesthetic role in almost every space. And while they are typically simple both in terms of basic utility and installation, there are actually a range of different switch types that can offer various options of functionality.

Some of the most common variations in light switches include:

  •      • Traditional switches – This is the classic light switch design that is seen in most homes and businesses. The basic design simply flips up and down to offer the easiest way of switching a light on or off.
  •      • Rocker switches – Similar in functionality to traditional switches, rocker switches offer a wider low profile switch that requires less accuracy to easily turn on without a second glance.
  •      • Ceiling fan switches – These are specially made with a split switch design for use with ceiling fans with lights so that each function can be controlled separately. Some fan switches also offer separate dimming functions to control light brightness and fan speed.
  •      • Timer switches – A timer switch offers the ability to have your lights turn on or shut off automatically when you want them to. These come in a range of designs from simple mechanical timer type switches to fully programmable light switches that allow you to set times for when lights turn on and off every day. Timer switches are great additions for convenience, energy efficiency, and even security, as they ensure that lights are only on in the evening, and that your house looks like it is occupied even when no one’s home.
  •      • Occupancy sensor switches – Another great option for saving electricity, an occupancy switch automatically keeps lights on when someone is in the room and turns them off when a room is empty again. There are a few different options for these including heat sensing & motion sensor switches.
