helpBoxBulb Color Temperature
The color of light, expressed in Kelvins (K). The sun is about 5800 Kelvins. This is called a "temperature," because the hotter fire gets, the more it changes from a warm yellow glow to white. The lower the Kelvin rating, such as the common incandescent/tungsten bulb, the warmer, softer and more yellow the light. The higher the K number, the cooler, whiter and bluer the light.

LED light bulbs are a relative newcomer to the world of lighting, but they have made a big impact with their clean white light, innovative designs and eco-friendly features.

Their full spectrum lighting is one of the best options on the market when it comes to emulating natural daylight with your lighting. And LED bulbs come in a range of varieties from dimmable bulbs to color changing options and even smart bulb designs that can be controlled from your phone or other mobile devices.

But LED bulbs really shine when it comes to being environmentally friendly. They are 100% recyclable, and run on a low voltage which makes them especially conducive for use with solar energy. In addition they are very energy efficient, which is great for the environment and your electric bill. LED bulbs are also remarkably long lasting, with many rated for over 50,000 hours of use (that’s around 25 times longer than a typical incandescent bulb). So although they may be a little more expensive on the initial purchase, these light bulbs save you a lot of money over time when it comes to replacement costs and a consistently lower energy bill.

When shopping for LED bulbs, you may need to familiarize yourself with a new term for quantifying lighting. Traditionally light bulbs are labeled with wattage, which describes how much energy they use. However, LEDs are extremely energy efficient, so their energy use isn’t very descriptive of their light levels. Instead, LED bulbs are measured in lumens, which actually describe how bright the bulb is. See the conversions below for approximate equivalents to make sure you are selecting the right bulb for your fixture:

  • 250 Lumens = approximately 25 Watts
  • 450 Lumens = approximately 40 Watts
  • 800 Lumens = approximately 60 Watts
  • 1100 Lumens = approximately 75 Watts
  • 1600 Lumens = approximately 100 Watts
  • 2600 Lumens = approximately 150 Watts
