There are 3 distinct ratings to familiarize yourself with: dry, damp, and wet. Dry locations: Areas where any dampness that occurs can be easily compensated for by ventilation, such as kitchens, living rooms, and dining rooms. Damp locations: Areas where some moisture and condensation can build up, normally bathrooms. Wet locations: Areas where water or liquids may drip, such as open decks, stairwells, and patios.

Deck lights are a specialty type of light fixtures that are designed to provide the ideal illumination for every area of your deck. These help to create a beautiful and functional entertaining space that can be used any time, day or night. However, deck lighting is also an important safety feature that can help prevent tripping and other accidents when using outdoor spaces in the evening.

Some of the most common type of deck lights include:

Deck Rail Lights - these are the most common form of permanently mounted deck lighting. These are intended to be mounting to the railing at the edge of your deck, and they actually come in a few different options of installation type: Recessed deck lights, undermount deck lights, and sconce type deck lights.

o Recessed deck lights are recessed into the side of a deck rail to provide illumination without taking up much space or protruding too far.

o Undermount deck lights are comparable to under cabinet lighting in their mounting style on the underside of the deck railing which provides beautiful and covert lighting.

o Sconce type deck lights are mounted on the sides of deck rails, but not into the sides of hem like recessed lamps. These are a good choice if you want your lighting to be part of your outdoor space design, rather than a background feature.

Freestanding Deck Lighting - These are similar to outdoor floor lamps, but generally feature some sort of additional functionality for your deck, such as planters. BBQ Lights – these are a helpful freestanding accessory that is used to add a bit of brightness to your grill so that you can keep the cooking going, even after sunset.

Aside from these variations, there are also a few other types of deck light, such as solar deck lights and color changing and low voltage lighting. So, explore the options and find the lamps that are ideal for your outdoor spaces.
