Romantic style, a period style of the Romantic era, is typified by the classic styles enjoyed in Europe at the end of the 18th century. Although most commonly referenced in terms of art, music and literature, romantic style is framed in nationalism, which at that time in history reflected an interest in exaggerated, embellished style. In past centuries, the style may have been called baroque, but during its time romantic style was an expression of artistic freedom rather than of excess. Today, though, the translation of romantic style may look very similar to baroque style: fanciful, freewheeling and happily frenetic.
