These relaxing installations are relatively inexpensive, and can offer a perfect finishing touch to a home’s curb appeal, but many are daunted by their permanent installation. However, these comfy benches are actually quite simple to install with the right tools and a little help. Here’s what you need to know to hang a porch swing your own porch:

Details to Check Beforehand

The most important part of hanging a porch swing is ensuring that you have a sturdy space to hang it from; suspending a swing from a beam that can’t support it could result in injuries as well as damage to your home.

The key to finding a solid spot for your swing is choosing a beam that functions as a structural support. These rafters are held to a higher strength requirement than non-loadbearing beams, so you can be sure that it they will support the weight. Of course if you aren’t sure what is load bearing and what might be decorative, don’t be afraid to consult a professional. It’s better to overzealous than end up with a dangerous swing.

Once you have the location settled, the next step is to assemble the tools and hardware that you’ll need to hang it. Many swings will come with some of the hanging hardware or chains, so be sure to take inventory before you purchase anything new. The essentials you’ll need include:

  • Hanging hardware that the swing will be suspended from. There are a couple of different options for this, with the best ones being specialized porch swing hardware, or a combination of standard eye bolts and s-hooks.
  • Sufficient lengths of rope or chains to hang the swing from. Be sure to double check the strength specifications to ensure that your rope or chain can support at least 500 pounds.
  • A measuring tape
  • A pencil
  • A drill
  • A ladder
  • Someone to help you with the heavy lifting

The How-To

  1. 1. Determine the exact spot where you want to hang the swing. Be sure to consider factors such as how far the swing will arc when moving and how high off the ground you would like it to be.
  2. 2. Measure the swing and mark the exact distance between swing supports onto the beam above.
  3. 3. Use the marks you have just made to pre-drill holes for your hanging hardware. The holes should be just a bit narrower than your hardware so that they guide them, but don’t prevent a securely tight fit. Predrilling is an important step that can prevent beams from splintering as you install the hardware.
  4. 4. Firmly screw your hardware in the predrilled holes.
  5. 5. Lift the swing up and suspend it from the hardware. Porch swings can get pretty heavy, so it is particularly helpful to have someone on hand to assist you for this step.
  6. 6. Ensure that the swing is stable and secure, then have a seat and enjoy your comfortable new porch swing!

And that’s all there is to it! Hanging a porch swing is a relatively straightforward process with a great payoff. However, if this still sound like too much work for you, you can always select a swing that comes with its own free standing frame. These have the advantage of being non-permanent additions with option of easily repositioning them as needed.
