When considering lighting for their home, many people overlook street and outdoor area lighting. However, your outdoor spaces make an impression on a guest even before they enter your home, and lighting can dramatically affect the curb appeal of your house. In addition, outdoor lighting goes beyond just the aesthetics, and is an important safety feature. Being able to see where children are playing, even in dusky hours, or having a clear view of who might be on your porch or coming up your driveway can keep your family and home safe. Installing porch lights can also be a welcoming feature and help brighten an entry so you aren’t left fumbling for your keys in the dark. Outdoor lights can have helpful roles in less public areas of your yard as well, such as lining garden pathways, illuminating a deck or patio to allow for backyard entertaining after dark, or keeping a backyard game of catch going, even after sunset.

In terms of stylistic choices, there are a wide range of outdoor lighting choices that can add to the safety and ambience your outdoor space. The most basic format is the floodlight. Simple, straightforward, and utilitarian, a floodlight can illuminate a wide area and would be a good solution for larger spaces like a lawn. But if you are looking to add some charm to your space, few lighting fixtures are as visually appealing as the traditional lamppost. Available in versions with one to four lights, a lamppost can be the perfect addition to driveways, back yards, and walkways. Before choosing a lamp, it should be noted that for most outdoor and street lighting fixtures, the post and top lantern pieces are purchased separately. This provides a lot of freedom to mix and match components and create the perfect lighting for your space.
