Recessed lighting trims are components of recessed lighting fixtures (also called can lights) that sit partially inside the housing to cover the edges of
the fixture. These pieces are crucial parts that help define the look of the lamp and the type and direction of light that it emits. There are four main
types of recessed lighting trims to choose from: Baffle, Eyeball, Shower, and Wall Wash.
- A baffle trim consists of a simple ribbed enclosure that provides a clean finished look to the fixture without affecting the direction or quality of
light emanating from the lamp. These are one of the most popular trim options, appropriate for any circumstance where you would like your recessed
lights to provide area lighting.
– Eyeball trims, also called Gimbals, are trims that allow you to pivot the head of the lamp point it in a single direction. This adds functionality to
the fixture and allows it to create the perfect lighting to highlight a piece of art or emphasize an architectural feature.
– As the name implies, shower trims are frequently used in lighting that is placed above showers. They are wet rated and feature a lens that covers the
recessed part of the light, protecting it from humidity or splashes. The lens on shower trims often features frosted glass to create a softer quality
of light that won’t be glaring in a space that commonly includes glossy finishes.
Wall Wash Trims
– These trims, also sometimes referred to as Eyelid Trims, partially cover the light to direct the illumination in a single direction, effectively
“washing a wall” in light. This angle can provide subtle and diffused ambient lighting that makes a space feel bright and open, even in the evening.
Whichever one of these types of trim you go with, be sure to double check that you are purchasing the correct size to fit the housing of your light. Common
trim sizes include four, five, and six inch sizes that disperse different amounts of light for various environments.
How to Choose Recessed Lights Recessed can lighting is often times a perfect addition to light in rooms around the home. Recessed can lights are low profile, available in energy efficient versions and are a great option for providing extra light without taking up too much wall or ceiling space.
