Good quality once installed. I would buy it again, because it fit.
By Thomas G. from Glen Ellyn, IL on Dec 13, 2012

The big attraction of this ladder for me is the frame length. I did not have a 54 inch opening to work with. As it is, the length was a very tight squeeze. I had to cut a little from the joist for clearance, but I knew my opening was a little shorter than the specified 47-inch rough-in. I spanned 3 16-inch joist spaces. So that was not a shortcoming of the ladder or description.

I opted for the steel ladder thinking that would make the opening just a little larger. I was surprised that the frame was 3/4 inch thick wood. (I found a small split while in the attic, which I clamped and glued) Installing the wedges is important here. They serve to align things. They also keep the ends of the sides attached by supplying compression. I found the longer contractor wedges (~ a foot long) from Lowe's to be much better to use than the shorter ones, because I made my frame dimensions a little tight. The longer wedges have a more gentle taper.

The framing instructions had words, and were rather good. But the actual installation instructions had no woods and were rather poor at communicating. A real puzzle to figure out. There were no instructions saying how many fasteners to use (unless they only expected you to use two); I used 9 or 10. For size they showed a picture of a screw and a Greek letter phi followed by 5 x 70mm and a nail with phi 4 x 100 mm. I guess the phi symbol is another way of saying mm, but I could not find that convention when I searched for it. I opted for available #12 by 2 inch Spax screws. That is shorter than the 70mm specified, but my frame was close, and the wood joists were very hard.

Their installation cartoons show suspending the frame by strings held up by boards. I did not initially figure out that the ladder is always to be positioned as far from the cover as it will go. I had initially thought it was an adjustment. From the instructions I deduce there also exists an "LXK" model (or is it an installation kit?) with an installation adjustment system that does not involve strings and wedges.

So you need strong string, wedges, a 10 mm wrench for the bolts, a slightly smaller wrench for the nuts ( maybe 3/8 inch but I used adjustable). You need a sharp hacksaw. You need to add trim, which I have not done yet. I developed my own length-to-cut method which included unbolting the bottom section for measuring and cutting. My oscillating tool saw was very nice for cutting plaster opening including going through some metal. It was handy for cutting the part of the wedges that stuck up after fastening.

The optional red handle I had ordered was a disappointment. It came packed with screws that were shorter than the ones that would have been replaced to fit the handle. It needed longer screws. I intend to figure out how to return it-- not suitable for the job in my opinion. Using the treads as a handle is good enough.

The installed appearance is very good. The stairs and door construction is solid The closing mechanism is really nice. I closed the door a few times during final wedging time to test for equal gap all around the door. With my tight opening length, I had bowed one side a small bit. I used a fastener plus wedge to straighten that side.

The rating system seems to have 4-stars rated as "almost perfect". It bothers me to say almost perfect. In my mind there is a big gap between average and nearly perfect. And I cannot think of a product I would rate as perfect. On balance I have rated 4 stars of 5, but I don't think it was close to perfect. It is 3.7 stars rounded.

Great ladder, cheap stair leg caps
By Robert C. M. from Clarksboro, NJ on Jul 17, 2012
Casual Do-It-Yourselfer
Its a great ladder for an attic access. Its strong, sturdy, and seals well. I like that it locks in place and has an insulation rating. I don't like the cheap cap for the feet they arrived broken in the box. On another unit that I had help install the caps kept falling off. I had a contractor install set of steps in my house and he was very impressed with the stair unit, but couldn't believe how all the rest of the ladder was so well built and Fakro put a cheap set of caps on the stair legs.
