2:02 pm., April 8, 1928, the first Karastan rug came off the loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship of a hand-woven rug. And thus, the Karastan name synonymous with elegant machine-made rugs that rivaled handmade counterparts was born, with beautiful designs in traditional, Persian/Oriental and contemporary motifs. Referred to as “Mystery Rugs” by the trade press for this new manufacturing process, Karastan shared the “mystery” of these rugs to the public by inviting the world to walk on a large version of its Kirman pattern in the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago. After the cleanup of half of the rug of more than five million footprints, spills and ground-in food stains, the Karastan rug still exists in the same state today —one side almost unrecognizably filthy, the other returned to its original beauty and luster.
