Schonbek pays homage to the earliest crystal chandeliers, which were hung with irregular chunks of rock crystal. Each rock crystal is as old as the Earth, created by sublime geological events that took place over a span of a million years. Fissures, inclusions and crystalline explosions form a completely individual fingerprint in the clear quartz.
The fascination with rock crystal dates back to ancient times, when emperors, caliphs and collectors spent fortunes having it sculpted into art. In the Renaissance, courtly collections were well stocked with rock crystal objects. Rock crystal, prized as a marvel of Nature, filled philosophers with wonder and inspired monarchs with dreams of power. Twenty-first-century designers may find it equally inspiring.
