How to Shop for Bollard Lights

Bollard lights are a type of outdoor lighting encased in a vertical post. They are commonly used as landscape lights to mark the course of a path or walkway and to designate the borders of a public area.

Voltage

Bollard lights commonly come in three voltages. Whichever one you select will depend on the wiring at your home and how you plan to use the light.

Many bollard lights come in 12 volt, which is commonly referred to as "low voltage". A standard home operates with 120 volts, so these bollard lights require the use of a transformer. These low voltage lights are more energy efficient and are safer for outdoor use than 120 volt lights. They can be connected in a line of lights, as long as the wattage of the lamps does not exceed the capacity of the transformer.

Some bollard lights are multi tap, which means they can be used with a variety of voltages. These typically have a number of ports that can be connected to a variety of voltages. Just make sure that you use the proper port for your voltage.

Other bollard lights are battery powered, requiring no electricity at all.

Plan Ahead

Before you buy, you will want to plan where and how you will install your bollard lights. Any electrical lights need to have buried wires, so make sure you will be able to bury the wires. Be sure to purchase enough wire and connectors to complete your project. Use waterproof connector caps with lights suitable for outdoor use to avoid safety problems.

All About Style

Bollard lights are primarily functional, used to illuminate a pathway or other outdoor area. This does not mean, however, that they cannot be stylish as well. Bollard lights come in a number of styles, some even feature your house number. Select a style and finish that complements your home and landscape.

Materials

Since your bollard light will be installed outside, you want to make sure it is safe for outdoor use. The product description should indicate that they can be installed in wet locations. Also select a material that will hold up in the weather you have in your area.

Most bollard lights are set into the ground, so also make sure the material is strong enough anchor the light. Some can be anchored to standing structures as well.

If bollard lights do not exactly meet your style, also check out pathway lighting or deck rail lights for other exterior illumination options.
