How to Shop for Wall Sconces

Nowadays, you can find wall sconces to compliment any style of décor. Whether you prefer Old World or more of a modern flair, there is a style of wall sconce to accent every home. Wall sconces are a quick and easy way to add light, character and style to any room in your home. They're simple to install and our wide selection of wall sconce designs makes it a snap for you to find the right fit for your sense of style.

"Wall sconces add a wonderful design element to any home. Also, a wall sconce can free up floor space, cast more light than a floor lamps, and can enhance the look of hallways, entryways and bathrooms," said Bud Wright, ATG Stores Sales Associate.

Over the years, wall sconces have experienced a few advancements but the basic design has stayed the same. From candles to hurricane lamps to electrical bulbs, wall sconces will always remain a popular lighting option.

Wall Sconce Style

You can find sconces in any style like contemporary, retro or traditional, or you can find sconces by themes such as tropical or vintage. Decide whether you would like you sconce to shine light upwards (towards the ceiling) or downwards (towards the floor). Remember that style is subjective. You can match your current style or branch out for a more eclectic look and get exciting results either way.

Wall Sconce Size

Sizing your wall sconces is easy after you measure the surrounding features and make simple notes of proportion. Outdoor wall sconces are sized using the "one-third rule" that suggests they be one-third (or one-fourth, if using two) the size of the door nearest to them, but things are more flexible indoors.

Wall Sconce Finish

Browsing by a sconce's finish is a simple way to narrow your search right away. Nickel, bronze and chrome are popular finishes, but you may want to experiment with something less common like steel or gold.

Finishes are also categorized in popular colors like black, white and verde, although casual browsing will reveal many more options.

Wall Sconce Shades / Materials

Indoor wall sconces are often defined by their shades. Shade color and material can transform the entire look of the sconce and the space it illuminates.

Special Features, Price and Brand Names

Finally, you can further refine your search by fine-tuning with special features or lead with your budget by choosing your price range before anything else. Do you have a favorite brand? If so, you can filter by brand name to ensure you get a wall sconce manufactured by a company you trust.

How high do I install wall sconces?

There are different rules of thumb of where to hang a wall sconce. One rule is 72 inches from the floor, another is to hang the sconce just above the halfway point on the wall. The height of the ceiling will be a clear determiner of the most appropriate location for wall sconce installation as well as the location of the stud bay for easy and quality installation.

How do I install wall sconces?

Because there typically aren’t ready fixtures on the walls of homes, installing wall sconces will take some time and DIY gusto, or the help of a professional. Here are the steps required to install a wall sconce:

  1. Pick a location; ideally choose a location with an existing light switch so the new wall sconce switch can be installed on the same stud bay as the already existing electrical outlet.
  2. Use a drywall saw to make cuts for the electrical box of the wall sconce and the light switch.
  3. Drill holes into the top stud inside the wall for each sconce, light switch and electrical outlets (if necessary).
  4. Install the wiring by starting with the sconce furthest from the electrical switch. Run 12x2 electrical wire from sconce to sconce until reaching the light switch as well as from the electrical switch to the electrical box.
  5. Wall sconces come with a cut-in box which will now be inserted into the wall and tightened into place with a screwdriver.
  6. Mount the sconces to their cut-in box and connect the wires.
  7. Next install the light switch for the sconces. Attach wires to their appropriate screw counterpart:
    • Copper screw is hot – black wire
    • Silver screw is neutral – white wire
    • Grew screw is ground – both exposed copper wires attach
  8. Test!

Most wall sconces will come with instruction specific to the model purchased, be sure to reference the product specific instructions for a successful installation.
