Project Management Tools for Construction

In this installment of the report on Miyako Inn and Spa's use of LightingUniverse.com's website to help with the renovation of its Los Angeles hotel, we shall learn about the management's use of ProjectManager, available on LightingUniverse.com. Russ Murphy, President of LightingUniverse.com, visited the Miyako Inn and Spa to check on the progress of the renovation project in January.

"When I visited the Miyako Inn and Spa, located in the heart of Little Tokyo district of Los Angeles, I toured the facilities with Mr. Thi Le, the engineer who was responsible for the installation of the light fixtures. Mr. Le had a small problem. The Assistant General Manager who had opened the account with LightingUniverse.com never passed along information about where the light fixtures had been purchased before quitting his job in December. As a result, Mr. Le wasn't sure where some of the fixtures had been purchased, or the history of the negotiations of pricing, etc.

Fortunately, LightingUniverse.com's Project Manager is designed specifically to help specifiers and others involved in lighting projects manage information beginning in the specification stage and through to installation.

I was able to set up a new account for Mr. Le, and build a project within Project Manager in about 5 minutes. Then, Mr. Le had access to descriptions of each of the fixtures already purchased, and in addition, he was able to develop a quote for the second phase of the project, commencing in spring of 2002, covering an additional 60 rooms. Using the email feature of Project Manager, we were able to send the project to the General Manager who inherited the specification challenge when the Assistant GM left. For both Mr. Le and his GM, LightingUniverse.com's Project Manager saved a lot of time and energy that might have otherwise been been wasted due to the Assistant GM's abrupt departure from the team."

Project Manager enables quick assembly of extensive electronic catalogs and cut sheets, and automatically generates electronic and printed versions for distribution to clients or colleagues. In addition, an electronic or printed fixture schedule may be created and distributed. Project Manager also links directly to the LightingUniverse.com shopping cart, so that purchasing is seamlessly linked once final project approval is received.
