Dining Room Lighting
While the holidays might be over, the job of playing host is never done. Whether the kids are still home from college or friends just won't go home, you will find your dining room still filled with guests. Here are a few lighting tips to take your dining room from functional to fashionable with just a flip of the switch.
1 - To highlight the crystal in your china cabinet, use a halogen bulb - the bright, white light will bring out its sparkle.
2 - Wall sconces are especially effective in dressing up the room and are an excellent way to make a room appear larger. Place the sconces above eye-level so the eye is not distracted by their glow. If the sconce is opaque, use a frosted bulb.
3 - Use down lights aimed straight onto the table to reduce glare in guests eyes.
4 - Chandeliers should be hung 30 inches above the table to provide sparkle, not glare. Use clear bulbs in crystal or glass chandeliers to enhance sparkle.
5 - When combining a chandelier and down lights, place one down light about 24 inches on either side of the chandelier above the table for even lighting.
